An emotional powerhouse of a musical with a thrilling rock score, NEXT TO NORMAL takes an honest look at the sometimes harsh realities of life. A typical family to the outside world, the Goodmans secretly struggle in their suburban home as they deal with the unpredictability of their mother’s worsening mental health. As they navigate their changing world, they deal with the pressing contemporary issues of trauma, loss, mental health treatment, and what it means to be “normal.” This raw, exhilarating, and deeply moving musical about the realities of the modern American family asks us to examine how we love and care for ourselves and each other.

COMMUNITY PARTNERS / Midland Center is proud to partner with MyMichigan Health and Family and Children’s Services who will be present in the lobby for each performance, available to lend an empathetic ear to anyone in need of assistance. Both groups, in addition to Community Mental Health for Central Michigan, The Children’s Grief Center, and Great Lakes Bay Mental Health Partnership, will provide materials in the lobby for patrons to peruse and take home.

PANEL DISCUSSIONS / Join us following the MAY 18 & MAY 26 performances for a post-show discussion featuring members of the cast and creative team, along with a mental health professional, as they delve into the show's content, characters, and creative decisions, as well as the representation of individuals dealing with grief and mental health issues.
