Science Distance Learning Workshops

These workshops are offered virtually. $125 for 1 classroom, $75 for each additional classroom; Workshops can accommodate up to 30 students
Learn how to observe changing weather throughout the year as we read The Snowflake: A Water Cycle Story by Neil Waldman. Following story time, participants will create water cycle bags. Grades: PreK-Kindergarten
Explore the movement of objects and the basic properties of magnets during an engaging story time. After, students will create a unique magnetic work of art. Grades Preschool-K
Explore the engineering design process and the causes and effects of erosion working in teams to devise a way to prevent beach erosion. Grades 1-5
Learn about the properties of matter and its relationship with energy. Plus, they'll explore chemical and physical changes with hands-on experiments and engaging demonstrations. Grades 5-8
Get immersed in the science of flight as learning about Bernoulli’s Principle and Newton’s Laws!  Participants also will build their own unique flying contraption and put it to the test! Grades 6-8

Visual Art Distance Learning Workshops

These workshops are offered virtually. $125 for 1 classroom, $75 for each additional classroom; Workshops can accommodate up to 30 students
Discover the role of color in art as we read A Color of His Own by Leo Lionni. After the story, participants will make their own color-mixing sun catcher. Grades: Preschool-Kindergarten
Students will join us as we read Mouse Paintby Ellen Stoll Walsh.  Following our story time, students will experiment with primary colors, simple shapes, and line as they create a unique work inspired by Piet Mondrian. Grades Preschool-1
Get inspiration from contemporary artists while working with paper to learn about the basics of sculpture and form then create unique three-dimensional sculptures during this fun program. Grades 1-5
Students will learn about the techniques of printmaking as they make simple prints. Students will draw influence from artworks of different cultures as they experiment with line and texture. Grades 6-8
Discover both the literary and artistic aspects of graphic novels while learning the basics of illustration and narrative writing. Participants will create and learn how to enhance a comic masterpiece with dialogue and character development. Grades 5-8
Students will be introduced to the work of Paul Klee as they explore the relationship between colors, emotions, and more. Students will create their own self-portraits inspired by Klee. Grades 2-5

Local History Programs

These workshops are virtual.
$100 per classroom; $50 for each additional classroom
Learn how innovations in transportation, like the Erie Canal, shaped Michigan and how the revolution of the auto industry shaped the nation. Discover how changes in transportation led to the settlement of Michigan; how Michigander ingenuity permanently altered American transportation; and how our local Dow history played a role too. Grades 3-5

Assembly Presentations

Our assembly-style presentations offer students an interactive science experience with dynamic demonstrations!
Presentations last approximately 45 minutes.
$125 for 1 presentation, $75 for each additional presentation
Explore the science behind sound with interactive demonstrations.  Investigate the role waves play in the creation of sound and experiment with loud vs. soft and high vs. low sounds. Grades PreK-2
What is a force? How do they impact our world and the way it moves?  We will explore the basics of forces as we demonstrate the power of magnets, gravity and more.  We will break down Newton’s Laws as we send objects flying and perform science ‘tricks’. Grades 2-8 
Discover how electricity affects the world in all forms through electromagnets, static electricity, plasma and more. Demonstrations include the Van de Graaf generator a hair-raising experience! Grades 3-12
Investigate the physical properties of chemicals in solid, liquid and gaseous states, including the strange effects extreme cold (liquid nitrogen and dry ice) has on everyday objects. Grade 5-8

Join us for engaging, discussion-based tours of our fine art galleries. Explore different artistic processes and techniques as you learn about the elements of art and principles of design. Curator-led tours are available for high school and adult groups, subject to availability.

Virtually explore our Hall of Ideas as your students discover the many intersections between art and science. Students will learn about the role chemistry plays in visual arts, how the science of sound impacts the world of music and how architects rely on simple geometry to create amazing structures.
