Explore portraiture using a model and professional lighting. Exposure, lens choices, lighting techniques, and poses will be some of the topics covered. A significant portion of this workshop will be hands-on individual work with our model. Techniques shared are applicable for photographing animals or pets.

Matting Your Photographs Workshop

During this workshop, you will learn how to mount and mat your own photographs. The Center has all the equipment to help you explore this craft. The goal of this class is to have each student successfully mat their own photograph. Students should bring two or more printed photographs. The Center will provide mat board and adhesive. Come with clean hands and patience.

Beginning Oil Painting

Learn the basics of oil painting or hone your current skills as you learn to manipulate brushes, mix color and apply paint using traditional & contemporary processes. Students will study old masters’ techniques such as grisaille and painting alla prima, and develop an individual painting style while painting from still life, landscape and portrait subject matter.

Jewelry Lost Wax Casting

Take your designs on paper through the process of lost wax casting to create finished jewelry. Beginning students will execute a guided project; intermediate and advanced students will work on their own designs. Wax working, casting, and finishing techniques will be demonstrated. At the start of the class, a group order will be placed for metal and supplies.

Soda Firing: From Clay to Kiln with Tim Ricketts

Experienced potters are invited to join Tim Ricketts on a six-week journey into the world of soda firing. first weekend Tim will discuss the uniqueness of soda firing and you will be given 15 lbs of clay to throw or hand build several pieces to soda fire. The studio and its equipment will be available for your use. You will also have access to the studio the second week during lab hours to finish and trim pieces. The Center will bisque all pieces. The third weekend Tim will divide you into two groups, one on Saturday and one on Sunday, where he will outline the most effective approach to glazing for a soda firing. You will prepare your own bisque pieces for the soda firing in the studio with the glazing supplies provided. The fourth weekend the two groups will meet either Saturday or Sunday at Tim’s studio to help load the kiln and discover the uniqueness of loading the kiln for a soda loading. During the fifth weekend is the firing. You’ll be allowed to participate in introducing soda to the firing process during a five-hour window during the firing process. Saturday, the sixth weekend we’ll all assemble at Tim’s to open the kiln and discuss results. If not able to be there for the final reveal, pieces will be available to pick up at the Center in the weeks following the workshop.

Are you new to the world of pottery? Are you a potter in love with hand-building? Then this is the class for you! The teacher will explore the three major hand-building methods: pinch pot, coil and slab using a project-based approach. Experienced potters will have the opportunity to build upon introduced projects introduced or pursue their own work. Clay must be purchased separately from instructor.

Students will continue to explore hand building using skills learned in Session 1. Students will be challenged to use the skills of pinch pot, coil, and slab in combination to build more complex structures. Extruder and tiles will be explored as well.
