Are you a future scientist or engineer?

Do you love mathematics or technology? Young STEM participants, grades K-8, are invited to submit a project proposal for the festival that includes a poster with a science or engineering experiment. Projects will be on display at Midland Center for the Arts for family, friends, and community members to view on May 22, 2021 from 10 AM-1 PM during the STEM Festival. Judging will take place during the event, with an awards ceremony to follow on May 23, 2021 at Dow Diamond (additional information will be available before the event). Student participants will receive two complimentary tickets for guests to the STEM Festival on May 22, 2021 and additional tickets will be $5 or free for Museum members. Masks and social distance will be enforced.

Please complete the STEM Festival application by April 23, 2021.  Accepted applicants will be notified by April 28, 2021. Spaces are limited.

What do I need to create for the STEM Festival?

Please design an experiment, engineering solution, or technological tool and bring the following materials to the STEM Festival to help show off your idea!

  1. Display/Project Board that includes:
    1. Purpose of your project
    2. Hypothesis/ Identification of a possible solution
    3. Research
    4. Materials Used
    5. Procedure/ Prototype development steps
    6. Data Collected
    7. Observations/Ideas for improvement
  2. Visual aids (items that help show judges what you did and how)

Entries will be judged based upon:

  • Creativity
  • Presentation
  • Design & Methodology
  • Project/Experiment Execution

Tips for Getting Started:

  1. Choose a topic of interest.
  2. Ask a question. What would you like to discover?
  3. Research your problem.
  4. Form a hypothesis.
  5. Plan your project.
  6. Collect your materials.
  7. Conduct your experiment.
  8. Record your data.
  9. Draw conclusions.
  10. Construct your STEM Festival display.
  11. Prepare and practice your presentation.
I give my permission for the Midland Center for the Arts to photograph and video tape my child, children, and/or myself during MCFTA Classes and Camps. I also acknowledge, that the material taken may be used for publicity purposes. I further agree to waive any rights of compensation or ownership thereto.

A parent, guardian, or group teacher/chaperone must be present during the STEM Festival Showcase and Awards Ceremony. Please note that this event is outside, and projects may not have access to a power supply.
